We are currently for two Internships.

 

Collections, Community Archives Intern 

 
The Gage County Historical Society and Museum is hiring an archives intern for our Community Archives Project, with a flexible schedule of 24-32 hours a week. This internship is geared toward college students or recent graduates. The position is for 240 hours of work at $13.50 an hour.  

This internship is in connection with the museum’s ongoing Community Archives Project. This project is dedicated to preserving and organizing a diverse collection of historical records, including genealogical materials, business documents, school records, photographs, newspapers, and more. This initiative aims to enhance public access to the museum’s extensive archives, allowing researchers, families, and community members to explore and connect with Gage County’s history. The intern will work with the Museum Director and Curator/Archivist to inventory records and collections, ensuring they are properly documented. The main component of this job will be organizing and cataloging archival material following established guidelines. Applicants should be comfortable handling historical documents and records with appropriate care. Other duties include identifying and documenting items of historical significance and collaborating with staff to improve collection accessibility.  

This position requires attention to detail and the ability to work independently. Training will be offered during the first two days of work. Applicants must be reliable and self-motivated, with effective communication and organizational skills. Coursework or previous experience in museums, archival work, or library science is preferred. Proficient computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel are a plus.  

This is a temporary position and therefore does not include benefits.

Collections Photo Intern  

The Gage County Historical Society and Museum is hiring an intern for our museum collections to scan photos including glass negative. A flexible schedule of 24- 32 hours a week is being offered. This internship is ideal for college students or recent graduates, offering 240 hours of work at $13.50 per hour.  

The internship is focused on preserving and digitizing a significant collection of historical materials housed at the museum, including photographs and glass negatives. The primary goal is to ensure these fragile materials are properly scanned and digitized for long-term preservation and easier public access.  

 This role will also involve organizing and cataloging the scanned materials to ensure they are accurately documented and easily accessible for future research and community use. This internship may also include additional museum-related tasks not listed here, providing the intern with a well-rounded experience in various aspects of museum operations and preservation practices 

The position requires attention to detail and the ability to handle delicate materials with care. Training will be provided during the first two days of work. Applicants should be self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently while maintaining the organization's standards. Experience with scanning, digital preservation, or previous coursework in museum studies, or archival work is preferred. Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel, are also a plus.
